Dillaplain honored by OSBA

XENIA — Paul Dillaplain takes his spot on the Xenia Community School District Board of Education seriously.

He’s so laser-focused on learning and improving that the Ohio School Boards Association named Dillaplain as a recipient of the prestigious 2021 OSBA Training Award, an inaugural award that is part of its new STAR Awards Program. The OSBA Training Award is presented to a select group as only 14 of the more than 3,400 board members in Ohio will receive the honor in 2021.

“Being a board member is not just attending board meetings,” Dillaplain said. “Rather, board members are the elected link between the district and its citizens. As the policy and decision makers of Xenia Community Schools, board members must expand their background knowledge of school governance for the district to succeed.”

The award requires 200 points earned over a three-year period and are obtained from professional development events and activities delivered by the OSBA or the National School Boards Association (NSBA). There are 15 types of events or activities which qualify for points towards the award including attending a regional fall or spring conference, attending OSBA’s State Legislative Conference, and attending the OSBA Board Leadership Institute.

“Only by active participation in a program of continuing education, will board members guide the district and its students toward excellence,” Dillaplain said. “I am very honored to receive this award.”

Points for service and training activities were previously used for the Award of Achievement and Master Board Member honors, which Dillaplain has earned. Now those points go toward either service or training awards, which comprise half of the STAR Award. The other parts are aptitude and recognition.

The OSBA Aptitude Award requires a board member to demonstrate an understanding and comprehension of a variety of board governance skills based on six leadership areas: vision, accountability, policy, community engagement, relationships, and advocacy.

The OSBA Recognition Award honors individual board members whose fellow board members — in recognition of their dedication to good governance and participation — wish to publicly acknowledge such contributions. The Recognition Award may be received separately or in combination with any or all of the other individual STAR Awards.

Dillaplain will be officially recognized at the virtual Southwest Region Spring Conference Tuesday, March 9.
