XENIA — The Greene County Archives is hosting a contest to highlight the stories of how individuals have used the agency’s records.

“Have you found something in the Greene County Archives that has aided you with your research? Did you find some record in the Archives that helped you find an answer to a question that had been tugging away at you for years? If so, we would love to hear your story!” a promotional release from the county agency stated.

Contest entries should be submitted as either a written essay or as a recorded video entry, in which the entrant describes how Greene County archival information aided in a particular quest.

“We’re trying to just look for a gem or a treasure that they might have found here that would help either with family research that they have done … or something that they never knew about that they were surprised to find,” said Greene County Archives Public Outreach Coordinator Elise Kelly.

Contest entries are due by 4 p.m. July 17. Finalists will be notified by July 20 and those select entries will be put up for public voting online. Voting will end at 4 p.m. July 27.

The contest winner will receive a free lunch, a tour of the Greene County Archives and the Greene County Courthouse in Xenia. The winner will also receive a certificate suitable for framing and their entry will be submitted to the state level of the contest.

Deborah Dushane, of Michigan, won last year’s contest with her entry detailing how she learned the full story of a relative who may have shot a Cedarville marshal in the 1880s. She eventually got in contact with a relative of the man her relative likely killed and apologized. Through the incident, the two sides were reconciled, and the relative of the slain marshal even voted for Dushane’s entry in the contest.
