Devotional: The Sign of Jonah

“A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” (Matthew 16:4)

Here is the classic response of Jesus to the religious leaders who continue to test Him by demanding that He do some miracle that will convince them that He is the Messiah. He has just miraculously feed thousands of people and that isn’t good enough. It is clear that nothing will satisfy them. They have another agenda other than discovering the Son of God. There will only be one sign that will shake the whole earth and that is His death and resurrection. That event will convince millions to follow Him down through the ages.

We rejoice that we don’t need another sign or another miracle to prove who Jesus is. We don’t need them, but He is happy to give them as we go through life. His touch on our lives is miraculous in many ways and they build the assurance we have in Him. His death and resurrection, is a preview of what is ahead for us because we trust Him. We imagine the joy and even celebrate now our life, death and resurrection. Alleluia!

Heavenly Father, we hope not to test You and Your love for us. We know Your love as we have come to know Your Son, Jesus. He is the true miracle for us. He is our life and salvation. Praise Your Holy Name! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
