Fairborn ties Greenville

FAIRBORN — Fairborn’s girls soccer team played to a scoreless tie against Greenville, Oct. 12. The Skyhawks are 4-8-3 overall and 3-4-2 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference American South Division and were scheduled to play Xenia Thursday.

Beavers tie Elks

BEAVERCREEK — Senior midfielder Marissa Ashbrook scored her 12th goal this season, Oct. 12 as Beavercreek and Centerville tied 1-1 in girls soccer. The tie gave the Elks the Greater Western Ohio Conference’s National East title with a 6-0-2 record. Beavercreek is 11-2-3 overall and 5-1-2 in the GWOC East. The Beavers host Franklin Oct. 18 in sectional tournament action. The Beavercreek has gone 10 matches without a loss and had won eight straight by shutout before Wednesday’s tie.

Yellow Jackets inch up in Division II

CEDARVILLE — Cedarville University advanced one more position to no. 6 in the latest U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II national women’s cross country poll.

The Yellow Jackets continue to set ratings records. No other CU team in any sport has been ranked higher since the school joined Division II.

Adams State (Colo.) remains the unanimous no. 1-ranked team in the nation. Rounding out the top five in order are Grand Valley State (Mich.), Mary (N.D.), Western State (Colo.), and Minnesota-Duluth. Four other Midwest Region schools along with GVSU and Cedarville appear in the Top 25. The quartet includes no. 7 Southern Indiana, no. 10 Northern Michigan, no. 12 Hillsdale (Mich.), and no. 18 Malone.

Koch named G-MAC Athlete of the Week

CEDARVILLE — Yellow Jacket junior Carsyn Koch has been selected the Great Midwest Athletic Conference’s Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week. The Washburn, Maine native placed third overall at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Invitational.

Koch was timed in 22:24 in the 6,000 meters — the second-fastest time in the league this fall. Cedarville placed third in the 12-team field while five of the team’s top runners were given the weekend off.

Olson labeled G-MAC Athlete of the Week

CEDARVILLE — Cedarville middle hitter Gabby Olson is the Great Midwest Athletic Conference’s Volleyball Athlete of the Week for matches played on Oct. 3-9. Olson, a 6-foot-4 junior from Gibsonia, Pa., guided the Yellow Jackets to a trio of conference home victories – all in three-set sweeps over Ohio Valley, Ursuline, and Malone.

She averaged 3.22 kills and 1.33 blocks per set as CU improved to 14-4 overall and 4-1 G-MAC. In nine sets played, she totaled 29 kills, 12 blocks, and one service ace. Olson did not commit an attack error in 47 attempts for a .617 attack percentage.

Hockey holding alumni golf outing

BEAVERCREEK — The 2016-17 season marks the 20th anniversary of the Beavercreek varsity hockey program and in celebration, the program will hold the first Beavercreek Varsity Hockey Alumni Friends & Family Golf Scramble. It will be held Saturday, Oct. 22 at Locust Hills Golf Course in Springfield. Included with the $80 entry fee are 18 holes of golf, cart, driving range, box lunch, dinner, and the chance to participate in a silent auction, raffle, and some fun games and competitions on and off the course. Dinner without golf is $20.

Registration and use of the driving range starts 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner and awards will be at approximately 6 p.m. highlighted by the introduction of the new Beavercreek varsity hockey head coach and former US Air Force Academy NCAA Division I player, Brig. Meet the FHS girls basketball team

FAIRBORN — The Fairborn girls basketball team will be introduced from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 in the Fairborn Baker Middle School Gymnasium. The Fairborn Skyhawks youth basketball teams, Baker Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade teams, Fairborn High School junior varsity and the Fairborn varsity team will all be introduced to the public and will demonstrate their skills. There will be concessions available, a 50/50 raffle, prizes and more.
