WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE — America Recycles Day is slated for Friday, Nov. 15 and to highlight the date, the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Recycling Center is holding an open house from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Recycling has reduced the amount of trash landfilled on a daily basis. Recent data shows that materials worth $9 billion are thrown away each year. The Wright-Patterson recycle rate is currently 50 percent.
“America Recycles Day brings attention to recycling,” said Dave Dalton, solid waste/recycling program manager.
There are many benefits to recycling at Wright-Patterson.
“We are able to divert solid waste from the landfill, avoid associated landfill costs, and actually make money on items that might have been thrown in the trash,” Dalton said.
Dalton said tons of material is recycled each year and is being reused, which generates income and keeps the base cleaner and greener.
Recyclable items can be dropped off at the recycling center during business hours Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. or at the 24-hour area behind the recycling center.
The recycling center will offer tours every hour Nov. 15, starting at 8 a.m. with the last tour at 2 p.m. Each tour will be 45 minutes and will be led by Thom Doucette, Operations Manager. The recycling center is located in Area A, Building 293, 3990 Road I.
The recycling rate across the country has more than tripled over the last 31 years to the current rate of 35 percent. This steady growth has created jobs, and has supported community development. Recycling and reuse activities in the United States account for 757,000 jobs and produced $36 billion in wages in a single year.
