Xenia Christian second in state preview


HEBRON — The Xenia Christian girls high school cross country team placed second overall, Saturday at the Ohio High School Athletic Association-sponsored season opening event at National Trail Raceway. The invitational event is the one opportunity for athletes to run on National Trail’s state championship course during the season.


Ambassadors soph0more Rachel Sweeney led Xenia Christian with a third-place finish in 20:54.77 behind race winner Mary Kate McElroy of Frye (20:36) and runner-up Izzy Farmwald, of Chippewa (20:39.70).


Xenia Christian’s Grace Norman grabbed an early lead at the 1-mile mark and finished fourth overall with a time of 21:07.43. Other finishes for the Ambassadors were turned in by: Ariana Nelson (14th, 21:38.73); Teresa Dell (47th, 24:16.49); Ann Kensinger (54th, 24:26.74); Sarah Kensinger (70th, 25:10.78); Mallory Stemple (78th, 25:40.15); Lauren Simmons (122nd, 28:50.90); and Beth Harmon (125th, 29:53.41). The Section I event had 151 competitors from all over the state.


The state championships will be held Nov. 1 at National Trail Raceway.

Firestorm tryouts Aug. 23 and 27


FAIRBORN — The Firestorm Fast Pitch Select girls softball team will be holding team tryouts from 10 a.m.-noon Aug. 23 for 10U and 12U athletes, and from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 27 for 10U, 12U and 14U at Fairborn Community Park, located on 691 Dayton-Yellow Springs Road just west of Fairborn High School.

Skyhawk Athletic Club seeking members


FAIRBORN — The Skyhawk Athletic Club is seeking members for 2014-2015. The club is an active organization of parents, teachers, coaches, alumni and friends who support athletes of the Fairborn City School system. The club meets at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month in the Fairborn High School commons area. Membership options range from $5 for to $100. Alumni football teams wanted


Gridiron Alumni is planning several full-contact alumni football games. Gridiron Alumni travels the nation pitting old football rivals against each other one more time. Hundreds of players and thousands of fans swarmed stadiums to watch their hometown heroes strap it on one more time. Gridiron Alumni is targeting teams like Xenia, Beavercreek, Greeneview, and many others. Players from all local areas are invited to register to play. Players are needed to sign up for their alma mater and the first 40 players on each team get to play. The team that gets 30 people registered first gets home field advantage.
