WILBERFORCE — Dr. Cynthia Jackson-Hammond, president of Central State University, has been named a finalist for the 2015 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Awards in the category of Female President of the Year.
The HBCU Awards are the first national awards to recognize the influence and impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities on American culture. Created by HBCU Digest, the awards honor winners in the fields of leadership, arts, athletics, research, and community engagement.
Finalists are selected based upon the impact of nominees’ achievement on institutional development, and for media coverage earned for the institution by way of the nominee. The winners will be announced July 10.
As president, Dr. Jackson-Hammond has established six compelling priorities that have become Central State University’s focus for operation: provide quality collegiate and academic experiences; targeted student enrollment; reduce time to degree; higher retention rate; development of graduates with the knowledge, skills and dispositions for professional careers and/or advanced studies; and efficient and effective institutional operations.
Under her leadership, the University has initiated three tenets that are unique to the image of Central State University: Service – Protocol – Civility.
Also last year, Central State received the federal designation as an 1890 Land-Grant University, a historic milestone.
