XENIA — Central State University and the Xenia Board of Education entered into an agreement Monday that will allow students from the university to work in Xenia classrooms.

Beginning this school year, students in the College of Education will be in Cox Elementary classes as student teachers and observers, helping to create lesson plans, teach and possibly work in smaller groups with students needing extra help.

In what Charles Hodge, dean of the college of education, called a “well-planned clinical setting,” CSU students will benefit by gaining the necessary experiences and understanding of the practical appreciation of pedagogical theories, while the Xenia school district will benefit from having a cadre of potential teachers and enhanced instruction for students.

“The long-range goal is to attract minority teachers for our school district,” Xenia Community Schools Superintendent Denny Morrison said. “The immediate benefit is for our kids. We’re embracing doing this.”

The agreement is similar to one made with Cedarville University last month. Teachers from that school will work in either Arrowood or McKinley, Morrison said.

In the long-term, Hodge hopes to develop a strong professional relationship between the college of education and the Xenia school district.

“We should have more going on in this district than any other district in the state,” he said. “This is an excellent opportunity we think for the college of education.”

Future plans, Hodge told the school board, could include Xenia faculty teaching courses at Central State and the university holding classes at Xenia schools.

In other school board business Monday, the board voted to officially change the name of Cox Stadium to Doug Adams Stadium.

Adams was a Xenia grad who was on the Ohio State football team that won the 1968 national championship. He was killed in a bicycling accident when he was 48-years-old.

The Adams Family Trust, started by parents Armic and Edna Adams, has routinely donated money Xenia schools and most recently donated $250,000 toward the installation of artificial turf at the stadium.
