Golf league wraps up
XENIA — The WGC Junior Golf League held its Grand Finale as 17 golfers teed it up in a scramble format. Team Goecke – consisting of Caleb Goecke, Meredith Goecke, Tyler Goecke, Noah Zimmerman, Mirabelle Zimmerman, and Oliver Zimmerman (all grandchildren of Garay and Dale Goecke) – shot a three-under par 32 to capture first place by one stroke. Team Goecke finished birdie-birdie on the final two holes to secure the win.
Team Newell – consisting of Travis Newell, Ian Rinehart, Peyton Rodebeck, Trey Santiago, Dillon Potts and Olivia Wagner – recorded a two-under 33 for second place. Rinehart won the Longest Drive Contest while Tyler Goecke had the Closest-to-the-Pin shot on hole five and and won the Longest Putt Made on the ninth.
Junior Golf League Director Jim Beaver awarded several special awards based on the total season. Zach Halder had the low scoring average of 40 for the Senior Boys while Potts led the Junior Boys with a 43 average. Anna Nartker had the low season average for the girls. Each golfer who participated in the scramble received a WGC Logo Ball in celebration of the Junior League being 40 years old this summer. A pizza party topped off the awards ceremony.
WSU Volleyball Honored for Academics
The Wright State University volleyball team has earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2014-15 season.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. For a complete list, click here. WSU posted a cumulative GPA of 3.378 and is one of 146 NCAA Division I programs to be recognized.
“Receiving this award is great recognition for our student-athletes and our program,” Raider head coach Susan Clements said. “We strive to give our student-athletes the support to succeed on the court and in the classroom. Earning this high academic award for that commitment is a great accomplishment. I am proud of them and proud of our program’s academic success.”
The Raiders open the 2015 campaign August 28 in the Wright State Invitational Presented by Holiday Inn.
Quick Change returning to Fifth Third
DAYTON – On Saturday, August 1, the Dayton Dragons welcome the return of “Quick Change” sponsored by Avis Rent A Car when the Dragons host the South Bend Cubs at 7 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. David & Dania puzzle an audience with their flashing costume transformations which happen in fractions of a second.
“Quick Change” combines the story of two performers from opposite ends of the world who have created a show that dazzles fans of all ages. David Michael Maas was born and raised in the United States while Dania Kaseeva grew up in Russia. Both David and Dania’s upbringing revolved around the circus. Upon meeting in the United States they have combined to create a musical ballet of whirling colors and illusions dubbed “A Magical Transformation.”
They have been featured in stage shows on the Royal Caribbean Cruise lines, The Oprah Winfrey Show, America’s Got Talent, Ellen DeGeneres Show, and the Steve Harvey Show.
Redlegs Run set for Aug. 8
CINCINNATI – Sign up now for the 14th annual Coldwell Banker West Shell Redlegs Run on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015 at Great American Ball Park.
Runners, walkers and families have many options to participate:
• 5K presented by Beacon Orthopaedics: Chip-timed 3.1-mile course starts on Mehring Way behind Great American Ball Park, winds along the riverfront and finishes inside the ballpark near home plate.
• 10K presented by Trophy Awards: Chip-timed 6.2-mile course starts on Mehring Way, winds along the riverfront, crosses over the Ohio River on the Taylor Southgate Bridge into Newport and back across the Purple People Bridge and finishes inside the ballpark near home plate.
• One Mile Family Run/Walk presented by UnitedHealthcare: One mile course starts on Mehring Way and finishes inside the ballpark near home plate.
• Gapper’s Kids Fun Run presented by UnitedHealthcare: Kids run around the warning track of the ballpark.
All events are for walkers and runners of all ages, with the exception of the Gapper’s Kids Fun Run, which is limited to kids ages 10 and under.
All participants will receive a finisher medal, race t-shirt (technical shirt for 10K participants), post-race party in the Kroger Fan Zone and one View Level ticket voucher for the Reds vs. Kansas City Royals game on Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 7:10 pm.
