Speedway expansion to change village landscape

ENON — There may be some changes coming to the downtown landscape in the Village of Enon.

Enon Village Council unanimously approved a development agreement with Speedway LLC (Speedway) to acquire and develop real estate in the village’s business district during Tuesday, Oct. 27 council meeting. The agreement allows Speedway to move forward with its plans to expand operations at 62 E. Main St. that would include a new convenience store and larger parking lot.

According to Enon Village Administrator Ben Ross, Speedway LLC would first purchase the real estate at 100 E. Main St. which once housed Dayton Carpet Liquidators. After acquiring the property, Speedway would then move forward with the construction of a convenience store. However, Ross said the expansion project would require Pleasant Street, which is presently owned by the village and located adjacent to both Main Street properties, to be vacated.

Ross said the vacation of Pleasant Street would also require the reconfiguration of the northeast corner at East Main Street and Enon Road. Currently, the Mad River Township Fire and EMS Department uses Pleasant Street to provide services to Enon and Mad River Township residents and businesses that are located north of Main Street. As stated in the development agreement, modifications to the turning radius at the northeast intersection would be necessary to accommodate the larger fire trucks. Without this reconfiguration, the vacation of Pleasant Street would be detrimental to the general welfare and interest of the village.

Both the village and Speedway have agreed to work together in the designing, modifying, and if necessary, the reconstruction of the northeast intersection. Speedway will shoulder all the costs for the reconfiguration and reconstruction as well.

Speedway has also agreed to pick up the tab for removing the meter pit and disconnecting the service from the water main on East Main Street. All other utilities that are in the right-of-way or affected by the vacation of Pleasant Street will also be properly rerouted and connected at Speedway’s expense. Pleasant Street will remain open to traffic until construction permits are issued for the new convenience store, and the village has begun the process of vacating the street.

Enon Mayor Tim Howard said Speedway’s expansion plan shows farsightedness and will add needed retail space at Speedway’s Enon location.

“Our village staff will work with Speedway throughout the planning and construction of this expansion. It’s a good project,” Howard said following council’s vote.

No time frame for this expansion project was discussed at the council meeting.

Speedway LLC operates as a subsidiary of Marathon Petroleum and is headquartered in Enon. According to the company’s website, Speedway is the largest chain in central Ohio and the second largest company-owned convenience store chain in the United States by revenue.
