JAMESTOWN — Greeneview Local Schools has received a $2,500 Judy Sleeth Art Scholarship.
In its second year, the scholarship honors Sleeth, who started Art in Action — a program which provides a comprehensive K-8 visual arts curriculum.
The grant was awarded to teacher Jane Aronhalt, and with the scholarship money, third grade students and teachers will receive art materials, access to online teacher training and lessons, and ongoing instructional support through the year. Aronhalt applied for the grant on behalf of Greeneview and will coordinate the program’s implementation. The scholarship can be extended for an additional year if program guidelines are met this year.
The funds will allow the district to expand art education to its elementary students. This program will be a launch-point to courses offered in grades 4-12. It will provide students with increased opportunities to express themselves artistically, and it will promote growth academically, according to superintendent Isaac Seevers.
In addition to her math intervention services, Aronhalt has provided artistic support to teachers and students over the past three years. Last year, all elementary classrooms contributed a piece of artwork to be auctioned off during the elementary PTO carnival. Classroom teachers worked with Aronhalt to complete the student-created pieces, and the project generated $1,500 for Greeneview PTO.
At the middle school, she worked with all fifth grade staff and students to create a glass mosaic tree, which now hangs in a prominent place in the building. Each fifth grade student created a leaf from glass scraps and small mementos from home to personalize the artwork. Members of the staff completed the mosaic trunk. Two years ago, Aronhalt partnered with several high school students to create a park bench which is now located outside the high school library. She developed these projects because she likes community projects and feels these activities bring students together so they can see how their individual contributions contribute to a large-scale project, Seevers said.
