Bretland wins SWBL CC title
BELLBROOK — Max Bretland won the overall Southwestern Buckeye League high school cross country title, Oct. 14. His time of 16:15 was 2 seconds better than Oakwood’s Kyle Lethander. Cole Weslow (16:44) was 13th overall for Bellbrook, which was third with 93 points. Eaton won the Southwestern Division with 67 points, followed by Oakwood (73).
Bellbrook girls win CC title
BELLBROOK — Avarie Faulkner ran third overall in 19:07 to lead Bellbrook High to the Southwestern Buckeye League girls cross country title, Oct. 14. The Golden Eagles had 41 points, while second-place Oakwood had 79. Elise Kemper (19:34) was sixth, Cara Fine (19:53) ninth, Minami Ford (19:55) 11th and Emily Pelfrey (20:06) 12th. Kayla Paul (20:48) finished 16th and Rachel Kahler (20:54) was 18th.
Cedarville boys win OHC
CEDARVILLE — The Cedarville High School boys cross country team won the Ohio Heritage Conference championship Oct. 14. This was the first time Cedarville has won the conference meet since 1994. The Indians had 42 points, followed by Greenon with 54.
All seven Cedarville runners made the all-conference team. Ethan Wallis and Trent Koning finished second and third overall.
Yellow Jackets third
BEAVERCREEK — Isaac Wood tied for fifth to lead the Yellow Jackets golf team to a third place showing in the Cedarville University Invitational, Oct. 15, at Country Club of the North.
Wood carded an 11-over 79-76-155 which was six shots shy of medalist honors. Ohio Dominican took the team title with 314-312-626. The Panthers were followed by California Pa., 311-324-635, and Cedarville University, 325-321-646. Jared Hoelzen tied for 14th place with 79-80-159. Three Cedarville players were entered as individuals. They included Hayden James (82-77-159), Mitchell Creamer (82-84-166), and Benjamin Sheard (81-87-168).
The team plays next on Oct. 23-25 at the NCCAA Championship in Palm Coast, Fla.
Marauders pick up fifth conference win
WILBERFORCE — With a dramatic five-set victory over Tuskegee, Oct. 15, the Central State University Marauders are one step closer to qualifying for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball tournament.
After dropping the first set 25-22, CSU won the next two with scores of 25-21 and 25-18. The Marauders appeared to have control of the fourth set, but TU battled back and eventually won, 28-26. CSU bounced back with a dominant performance in the deciding set, beating Tuskegee by a lopsided score of 15-6.
The women will compete at home at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19 against University of Cincinnati-Clermont.
WSU falls to Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Wright State University women’s volleyball team lost 4-25, 27-29, 25-21, 26-24, 8-15, Oct. 15 at Milwaukee.
Milwaukee took the early lead at 3-1, but Wright State pushed back against the Panthers to take the lead at 4-3 by going on a 3-0 run in the second set. Wright State took an early lead at 4-2 after a service ace from senior defensive specialist Rachel Kremer during the third set.
Milwaukee took an early lead in the fourth at 6-1 before Wright State took a sideout after an attack error by the Panthers. The Raiders fought back after going on a few runs and quickly tied the game at 9-9 after an attack error by Milwaukee. Both teams continued to battle in the fifth set, trading points back-and-forth pushing the score to 11-8 with Milwaukee still in the lead. An attack error by Wright State jump started a 4-0 run by Milwaukee, and the Panthers won the final set 15-8 to end the match.
The women play again at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20 taking on Northern Kentucky, and at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 against Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.
Kianicka/Ueltzhoeffer wins doubles
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Wright State men’s tennis team competed Oct. 15 in the final day at the Louisville Invitational.
Michal Kianicka and Marcel Ueltzhoeffer claimed victory in the A-flight consolation doubles, winning 6-2. The doubles team of Param Punan and Fernando Nardelli finished as runner up in the B-flight doubles, falling to Lipscomb in the finals, 8-3.
The Raiders will return to action Thursday, Oct. 19 as they travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Ohio Valley Regionals.
Cedarville wins fifth in a row
NORTH CANTON — Cedarville University’s women’s soccer team continued its move up the Great Midwest Athletic Conference standings, while extending its winning streak to five, with a key 2-0 decision Oct. 14 at Walsh.
The Lady Jackets, 9-5-1 overall and 7-3-1 G-MAC, clinched a berth in the upcoming conference tournament with the outcome. Hannah Atkinson finished off a corner kick from Bex Velloney for her team-high sixth goal of the season to break the scoreless duel in the 73rd minute. Grace Miorelli provided some breathing room with her fifth tally unassisted in the 80th.
The Yellow Jackets will play again at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19 against Ursuline College.
First football win for CSU, 40-35
PINE BLUFF, Ark. — The Central State Marauders mellowed Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s homecoming celebration with a 40-35 college football win over the Golden Lions, Oct. 14.
The CSU defense forced the Golden Lions into a quick three-and-out to give the ball back to Mays and the Marauder offense. CSU seized control with another 83-yard touchdown drive in the late stages of the game. CSU kept the ball on the ground with 10 straight running plays. Defensively, CSU was led by Isaiah Smith’s nine tackles. Mikey’ion Hunter recorded eight tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery. With the win, CSU is now 1-6 overall.
The Marauders will return to Wilberforce at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 with hopes of earning their first conference victory when they host Fort Valley State.
Men’s soccer falls in OT
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Stefan Rokvic collected two goals for the second straight time, but it wasn’t enough as the Wright State men’s soccer team lost, 3-2 in overtime, Oct. 14 at Milwaukee.
Rokvic netted his fifth goal of the year at 20:12 on a header off a free kick by Florian Hoffmann. That was all for the scoring in the first half as WSU finished the first 45 with six shots, two from Rokvic and two from AJ Paterson. The next half was different. UWM’s Evan Conway scored at 52:48 to knot the game, but Rokvic picked up his second goal of the day at 56:43 off an end-line serve from Eric Hutton. The Panthers tied the score again on a goal by Jaime Collin at 64:35.
The overtime period ended when Milwaukee’s Conway collected his fifth goal of the year. WSU had 10 shots overall to 17 for UWM as Rokvic had four. Raider goalie Joel Sundell made five saves.
They play again 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 at Northern Kentucky.
Jackets get big win
AURORA, Ill. — Cedarville took out Wayne State in three sets in women’s college volleyball to complete a 2-1 tournament at the Midwest Region Crossover, Oct. 14 at the Great Lakes Center.
The Yellow Jackets were 25-20, 25-20, 25-22 winners to square their season record at 11-11. All-tournament selection Gabby Olson guided a balanced attack with 12 kills and seven blocks. Taylor Wilkerson pounded 12 kills and Krissy Pratt added 11. Freshman setters Lindsey Bray and Sierra Schuitema came up with 14 assists each. Brooke Blattner turned aside four blocks.
The women hit the court again at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19 at Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi, W.Va.
WSU cross country competes
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Wright State University cross country teams competed Oct. 14 at the 2017 Pre-National Invitational.
Junior Hailey Brumfield led the way for the Raider women, finishing 33rd with a time of 21:47 in the 6,000-meter women’s race. On the men’s side, sophomore Nathan Dunn finished with a 25:04 in the men’s 8,000-meter race, good enough for 40th.
Wright State will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 28, as they travel to Rochester, Mich., for the Horizon League Championships.
Late goal dooms Yellow Jackets
CEDARVILLE — Walsh University found the net off a corner kick in the 86th minute to steal a 2-1 Great Midwest Athletic Conference men’s soccer result Oct. 14 at Cedarville University.
The loss sends the Yellow Jackets down to 7-8 overall and 6-6 G-MAC with two games remaining. The Cavs were awarded a penalty kick in the 10th minute when a hand ball was called on the hosts inside the penalty area. CU controlled the contest for the next hour, which included a Zac Muir header that went off the crossbar. The Jackets finally leveled the match in the 55th minute. Cedarville created opportunities in the final minutes, highlighted by Brian Wolverton being stopped from point-blank range with 25 seconds left.
The men play again at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 against Lake Erie.
Women’s tennis continues
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The Wright State women’s tennis team competed in the third day, Oct. 14 at the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals.
The Raiders nearly swept all their matches throughout the day, receiving wins in the singles department from Haily Morgan and Madison Riley. The doubles team of Madison Riley and Luisa Pelayo also won their consolation match, 8-6.
The tournament continued through Monday. Results were not available as of press time.
Women fall at IUPUI
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Wright State University women’s soccer team lost, 4-3, Oct. 13 at league-leader Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis.
IUPUI scored early on in the contest for an early 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, the Raiders answered on a shot from senior forward Sarah Colvin for her sixth goal of the season. The Raiders struck again to take a 2-1 lead, from a long ball sent into the box by senior midfielder Niki Romero. The second half saw no shortage of offensive action from both teams. IUPUI’s victory runs its win streak to 11 games and moves them to 6-0 in the Horizon League.
WSU will host Cleveland State at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Beginner archery clinic
BEAVERCREEK — Beavercreek Parks Department is offering a Beginner Archery Clinic Saturday, Oct. 21 at Wartinger Park Barn. The adult clinic is from 10 a.m to noon, and the family clinic (age 10 and up) is from 1-3 p.m. Youth ages 10-17 must be accompanied by an adult 21 years or older.
This clinic is appropriate for beginner archers with little to no experience. A certified archery instructor will teach participants safe archery procedures, basic equipment use, the basics of shooting a bow and arrow, and time to practice will be provided. Bucs in Flyin’ to the Hoop
DAYTON — Xenia High will be among the area and national teams participating in the annual Flyin’ to the Hoop Invitational basketball showcase event.
The Buccaneers, led by junior Samari Curtis who is considered by the tournament as the pre-season fourth ranked junior in Ohio, are scheduled to play Olentangy Liberty at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at James S. Trent Arena, in Kettering.

Jump Start basketball offered
BEAVERCREEK — City of Beavercreek Parks and Recreation in cooperation with Jump Start Sports is offering a basketball program for children. Jump Start Basketball is an instructional and recreational basketball program designed for children in Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten, and grades 1-2. The goal of this program is to pique each child’s curiosity, to get kids excited about playing basketball and to teach good basic fundamentals at the same time.
The workshop will be held, Nov. 6 through Dec. 11.
