Confectionately Yours: The time of the singing birds has come

I was shopping in a big box hardware store early in the morning, and noticed the loud chirping of several birds that were also in the store. Somehow they found out that there is warmth, safety, and a truckload of birdseed stored within those walls. I learned from a checkout lady that the birds have learned that the door opens automatically when approached, and this how they get in. For some reason, I found this amusing.

In doing a little research, I discovered this early morning chirping is for communicating. What you may not know is that, with few exceptions, it is the males that are making all the chatter. They chirp or sing to attract a mate and to announce their territory. Each day, as soon as possible, the males want to make sure that everyone knows that they are alive and well and ready to defend their domain.

What is interesting, although it may all sound the same to us, is that there is some evidence suggesting that each bird has its own unique song and other birds know it.

Another reason why birds chirp at the crack of dawn is that the pre-dawn hours are usually the quietest part of the day. I’ve always enjoyed sitting on the porch early in the day and listening to the birds. I like to imagine them thanking God for a new day, communicating with their Creator. Their morning songfest always sounds so joyful.

I wonder if that is why my early morning time with God always seems to be the best. Generally, I am rested, and it is the quietest part of the day. A cup of coffee in my favorite spot, my Bible, and a talk with my heavenly Father are the best ways for me to recharge for the chaos of life ahead, and praise Him for who He is.

I’m sharing today a candy recipe so easy that even your kids can help. I shape them into little bird’s nests with candy eggs or jelly beans inside. — Confectionately Yours, Sue

Nutty Noodle Clusters

1 (12 oz) pkg semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 (12 oz) pkg butterscotch chips

1 c. peanuts, chopped

bag of chow mein or rice noodles

Melt chips on low setting in microwave stirring every 30 seconds until smooth. Add the noodles & peanuts. The amount of noodles is your preference. I add enough so that they are well coated with the melted chocolate, but not so much so that I can see the surface of the noodle.

Spoon out onto parchment paper or silicone mats. Make a depression in the middle if you are desiring them to be little nests for egg shaped candies. Fill will candy & let set up in fridge.
