Twelve Golden Eagles to sign
BELLBROOK — Bellbrook High School will have 12 student athletes sign their National Letters of Intent to continue their scholastic and athletic careers at the college level. The athletes will sign during a special halftime ceremony at approximately 8 p.m. at Tuesday’s Feb. 12 boys high school basketball game between Bellbrook and visiting Preble Shawnee.
Student athletes scheduled to sign are: Hayden Bullock, (Football, U.S. Air Force Academy); Ethan Knisley (Football, University of Mount Union); Brendan Labensky (Football, Rose-Hulman Institute); Clay Cavanaugh (Cross Country/Track, Muskingum University); Jade Edwards (Women’s Soccer, Piedmont College); Amira Faulkner (Women’s Triathlon, Trine University); Kira Merkle (Women’s Volleyball, Ferris State University); Sara Rogers (Women’s Volleyball, Case Western Reserve University); Bethany Ulring (Women’s Volleyball, Trine University); Hayden Greene (Men’s Basketball, JC-Pasco-Hernando State College); Abby Judge (Women’s Soccer, Piedmont College); and Jared Zacharias (Men’s Soccer, Cedarville University).
Bolen headed to disticts
WASHINGTON TWP. — Greeneview’s Cameron Bolen placed seventh in the 100-yard freestyle and eighth in the 100 breaststroke at Saturday’s sectional championships at the Washington Township Recreation Center. Bolen will now compete in the Southwest District competition, which begins Friday, Feb. 15 at Miami University in Oxford.
The Rams Adara Brooks placed 11th out of 30 swimmers in the 200 free, Kalyn Biggs placed 12th in the 50 free out of 41 girls. Emma Snyder placed ninth, while Kelsey Merriman placed 10th, in the 100 free. Caitlyn McDonald placed 13th in the 500 free, and Kevin Combs placed 16th in the 50 free out of 47 competitors.
Sectional games moved to Springfield
DAYTON — Due to a roof leak at Tecumseh High School in New Carlisle, all girls Division II sectional high school basketball games have been moved to Springfield High School, but the same game times and dates will remain. Locally, the only team affected would be top-seeded Carroll. The Patriots open tournament play at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, but now at Springfield High.
Rockets win over Greeneview
ANNA — Host Anna led 57-35 after three quarters of play in a Feb. 9 nonleague 70-50 win over Greeneview in boys high school basketball. Gabe Caudill led the Rams (7-12) with 13 points. Anna’s Bart Bixler led all scorers with 26 points.
Minster defeats Patriots
RIVERSIDE — In a battle of state-ranked teams, Minster (No. 2 in the latest Ohio Division IV poll) defeated Carroll (No. 1 in Division II) by a score of 50-35. Minster statistics were not reported, but Elisabeth Bush led the Patriots with 10 points scored, Allie Stefanek and Julia Keller scored seven each, and Megan Leraas added six in the loss.
Golden Eagles defeat Oakwood
OAKWOOD — Bellbrook finished the regular season by beating Oakwood, 47-41, in a girls high school basketball Southwestern Buckeye League game Feb. 9. Kayla Paul led all scorers with 17 points and Bailey Zerby added 12. Margie Conrath led the Jills with 15 points and Kylie Neff added 12 in the loss. The fourth seeded Golden Eagles (12-10) will begin Division II sectional tournament play at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16 at Lebanon High School against Dunbar.
Fairborn wins over Xenia
FAIRBORN — Freshman Natalie Oktavec scored a career-high 33 points as host Fairborn (11-11, 9-5 Greater Western Ohio Conference South) claimed a 76-39 girls high school basketball win over Xenia on Feb. 9. Evelyn Oktavec added 16 points, Zy’on Olinger scored 10 points and Sadie Smith scored nine in the Skyhawks win. Kamea Baker led Xenia (1-21, 1-13 GWOC South) with 11 points scored while teammate Brynna Mardis was next with nine.
Both teams begin Division I sectional tournament play on Saturday, Feb. 16. Fourteen seeded Fairborn will take on No. 5-seed Springboro at 7 p.m. at Troy High School. No. 18 seed Xenia takes on No. 2 Wayne at 4:30 p.m. at Butler High School in Vandalia.
Firebirds beat Beavercreek
KETTERING — Host Fairmont outscored Beavercreek by a 42-22 margin in the second and third quarters combined, to roll to a 67-42 girls high school basketball win on Feb. 9 at Trent Arena. Madison Bartley led Fairmont with 16 points scored. Beavercreek’s Taylor Steinbrunner led the Beavers (13-9, 6-6 Greater Western Ohio Conference East) with 13 points. The Beavers begin postseason sectional play at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 165 when they take on Butler, at Troy High School.
Rams bowlers fifth, sixth
BEAVERCREEK — The Greeneview High School girls bowling team placed fifth out of seven teams, while the boys bowling team placed sixth out of nine teams in the boys competition, at the Ohio Heritage Conference bowling tournament, Feb. 9 at Beaver-Vu Lanes.
Anna Willingham rolled a three-game 464 series to place sixth in the girls tournament. Braedan Brennaman placed eighth overall in the boys competition with a three-game series of 527. Mechanicsburg won the boys tournament, while Greenon won the girls event.
Rams edge Madison Plains
JAMESTOWN — The host Rams outscored Madison Plains 16-13 in the final quarter Feb. 8 to claim a 41-39 win in Ohio Heritage Conference boys high school basketball play. Gabe Caudill led Greeneview with a game-high 18 points scored, Ian Tamplin dished out eight assists and Collin Wilson snared six rebounds. Matt Johnson led the Golden Eagles with 10 points scored.
Skyhawks nab Senior Night win
FAIRBORN — Host Fairborn defeated West Carrollton, 68-60, on Senior Night, Feb. 8. Shaunn Monroe’s 23 points led the Skyhawks. Joe Nickel was the second leading scorer with 19 points, and O.J. Person added 13 points. Fairborn is back in action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12 versus Miamisburg at the Baker Memorial Fieldhouse.
Rams defeat Xenia
XENIA — Greater Western Ohio Conference South division champion Trotwood-Madison defeated host Xenia by a 113-89 final score on Feb. 8 at Xenia High. No individual statistics were provided by Trotwood-Madison. Xenia was led by Samari Curtis, who finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds, Dylan Hoosier knocked in 22 points, Jate Bradley scored 16 points and Noah Crawford finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Xenia (11-9, 7-5 GWOC South) plays at West Carrollton next at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12.
DC blasts Bulldogs
MIAMISBURG — Host Dayton Christian outscored Yellow Springs by a 14-0 count in the final quarter in Friday’s 50-20 win over the Bulldogs. Andrew Clark led Yellow Springs with 13 points scored. DC’s Anton Webb finished with a game-high 22.
Knights defeat Carroll
RIVERSIDE — Visiting Alter held a 28-14 halftime lead and held on for a low-scoring 38-28 boys high school basketball win over Carroll, Feb. 8, in a Greater Catholic League Co-Ed contest. Alter’s Brady Uhl and Carroll’s Matt Cogan shared high scoring honors with 13 points each. Carroll (10-10, 2-7 GCLC North) heads to Germantown to take on Valley View next, at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12.
Warner in quarterfinals
XENIA — Xenia Warner’s eighth-grade boys basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Greater Western Ohio Conference Gold Bracket Tournament with a 46-38 victory Feb. 9 over Miamisburg. Shawn Thigpen led the Bucs in scoring with 20 points. Tremell Wright added 13, Tawfiq Jabbar and Damien Weaver scored four each, Trei’Shaun Davis-Sanders scored three points, and Blake Owens scored two. The 13-4 Bucs play Centerville Gold on Saturday, Feb. 16 next.
Kentucky State sinks Marauders
WILBERFORCE — Visiting Kentucky State made up for a one-point halftime deficit by outscoring Central State University 46-32 the rest of the way for an 82-69 men’s college basketball win, Feb. 9, at the Beacom/Lewis Gymnasium. Tom Johnson led CSU (2-20, 3-12 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) with 18 points scored, Orion Monford scored 14 points and Malik Fisher added 10 in the loss. KSU’s Ditalion Battle turned in a game-high 26 points, David Jelks finished with 20 points, and Kevin Hayes tossed in 19.
Thorobreds rally past CSU
WILBERFORCE — Visiting Kentucky State outscored Central State by a 24-11 margin in the fourth period of play to claim a 71-58 win, Feb. 9 in women’s college basketball play at the Beacom/Lewis Gymnasium on the CSU campus. Chervelle Cox led the Marauders (8-15, 5-9 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) with 17 points. Falon Edwards was the other CSU player in double-figure scoring with 14. KSU was led by Jessie Kee with a game-high 22.
Both the men’s and women’s programs were playing a rematch on Feb. 11 at Kentucky State University’s William Exum Center.
