All Xenia third, fourth, and fifth graders will participate in a STEAM day once throughout the school year through the XCS Gifted Program. Sessions will all be focused on flight, with each grade level honing in on a specific “type” of flight. The fifth-grade theme is “Out of This World.” The day focuses on space exploration and features a journey through space in a portable planetarium. Students got hands-on as they worked to build a bottle rocket out of recycled materials to bring John Glenn, Neil Armstrong, and Sally Ride back to Earth from the International Space Station. The students also made galaxy themed magnets and an edible rocket as a special treat. Each received a take-home kit of materials to encourage further exploration of flight topics. STEAM days are funded by a grant from Joan Hammond of Hammond Drierite through the Xenia Community Schools Foundation.
